The Animal Alphabet
The literacy workbook for Grade 0&1 changing the game in Swazi schools

[1] Introduction
Colouring in, tracing, and sounding it out. Getting to know the letter and the animal through various activities, eg. stand on one leg flamingo competition.
[2] Letter Recognition
The children may not be able to read yet, but they can develop pre-reading skills and letter recognition. And as a bonus, there’s some maths here too!
After the teacher reads the poem, the students look for the 13 ‘f’s by following the lines with their fingers as if they were reading; ticking off each ‘f’ they find in the boxes below.
These poems can become much-needed reading material later on.

[3] Letter formation
Complete a range of fun activities to get the letter’s shape just right: moulding the letters out of playdough, hopping along a giant letter outside, tracing it on sand trays/friends’ backs, and finally, writing it on paper (preferably with lots of colour/paint/found objects)!
[4&5] Context and Practice
Students come to understand how the letter is used in words and those words in sentences. They also practise writing it, sounding it out, and begin to learn how to read basic words.
